Drusen - African American Woman

50-year-old woman has drusen and maculopathy. I last saw her back around 2006. She noticed her vision getting worse, but mostly she is bothered by difficulties up close. She is currently using drug store reading glasses.
VISUAL ACUITY: OD 20/30, OS 20/25. IOP: OD 10, OS 9.
SLIT EXAMINATION: There is 2+ nuclear sclerosis in both eyes.
EXTENDED OPHTHALMOSCOPY:
OD: Vertical C/D ratio is 0.2. There is no posterior vitreous separation. There is 2+ macular drusen.
OS: Vertical C/D ratio is 0.2. There is no posterior vitreous separation. There is 2+ macular drusen. Photos confirm clinical findings.
OCT SCAN: The OCT scan shows nearly normal retinal scans.
IMPRESSION:
1. DRUSEN MACULOPATHY - BOTH EYES
2. CATARACTS
DISCUSSION: I explained to the patient she does have technically macular degeneration with macular drusen, but given her young age, clearly she has a genetic variant. I suggest she do her best to control her health with low cholesterol and low blood pressure. There is some theoretical evidence that donating blood might be helpful for patients with macular degeneration and also omega 3 fatty acids have proven helpful.
