57-year-old woman was seen in the office on 2/22/2011. She has macular drusen in both eyes. I saw her back in 2006. Since then she does notice slight increased distortion. She had laser for glaucoma in 2005. VISUAL ACUITY: Vision OD is 20/25, OS is 20/25. IOP: OD 16, OS 18. AMSLER GRID: Normal in both eyes. SLIT LAMP EXAM: There is 2+ nuclear sclerosis in both eyes. EXTENDED OPHTHALMOSCOPY: OD: Vertical C/D ratio is 0.2. There is no posterior vitreous separation. There are 3+ macular drusen. OS: Vertical C/D ratio is 0.2. There is no posterior vitreous separation. There are 3+ macular drusen. PHOTOGRAPHS: Photos confirm clinical findings and show confluent soft drusen in the macula. OCT SCAN: The OCT scan shows no intraretinal or subretinal fluid in either eye. There is a partial posterior vitreous separation in each eye. The nerve fiber layer scan shows an average nerve fiber layer thickness in the right eye of 107 microns and the left eye 105 microns. Both are within normal limits and relatively symmetric. IMPRESSION: 1. DRY AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION – BOTH EYES DISCUSSION: I explained to the patient she does have macular drusen and dry age-related macular degeneration. I asked her to continue taking the eye vitamins and also consider taking fish oil and lutein supplements in addition to keeping her cholesterol and blood pressure under control. It might be helpful and there are theoretical reasons why anti-inflammatory medicines, such as Advil, and even becoming a blood donor might be helpful. I discussed all this with her. I told her to return in two years, sooner should she notice a problem.
